The advances in technology and improved knowledge in this field have significantly improved the outcome of various childhood renal disorders. However, this medical progress has yet to reach all children with kidney diseases in a developing country like India where the problems of "lack of awareness", late detection, delayed referral, passive attitudes and socio-economic and cultural factors predominate. The textbooks covering Pediatric Nephrology in depth, published in the developed world are by and large not relevant to our scenario. There was a need to have a concise text providing essential basic information of practical importance regarding kidney diseases of children which would serve as a guide to pediatricians and the students of Pediatrics. This need has been fulfilled by the book "Pediatric Nephrology." The book covers the entire spectrum of childhood renal disorders. The emphasis is on clinical aspects, diagnostic evaluation manage-ment of common conditions. The basic elements of renal functions, clinical and laboratory evaluation and imaging provide a useful base to the reader. Passing mention has been made of basic pathophysiology of various events and recent advances in the field to make the reader aware of the current status of "Science of Pediatric Nephrology." Due importance has been given to age-specific renal problems with a focus on neonatal nephrology. The book is largely descriptive. The language is simple and easy to understand. It would have been nice to have some algorithms included for clinical approaches to common conditions like nephrotic syndrome, nephritis and urinary tract infection. Key messages at the end of each chapter would emphasize important points to remember. There could have been clearer guidelines on specific indications for referral to higher centers in various clinical presentations. The book is a "must" for all pediatricians and postgraduates of Pediatrics. It will also be useful to other child health care providers including pediatric surgeons, urologists and "adult nephrologists." K.D. Phadke, |
