FAQs on Vaccines and Immunization Practices

Vipin M Vashistha, Ajay Kalra and Naveen Thacker

Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers, New Delhi,

1st edition, 2011,

Pages: 402; Price: 495/-.

Vaccination is arguably the most dynamic and interesting subject in pediatric practice. This book attempts to provide an in-depth account of the subject while maintaining the user friendly question answer format. The volume is divided into six sections: general vaccination, EPI vaccines, non-EPI vaccines, vaccines in the pipeline, novel approaches to vaccine formulations and delivery systems, and therapeutic vaccines. Most practical issues related to vaccines are covered well by giving suitable examples and clinical situations. However, in few chapters, the practical tips are missing and questions are more theoretical. Editors have done a wonderful job to maintain uniformity in presentation and avoid contradicting statements and overlap at most places; a Herculean task for a multi-authored book. Suggestions for future editions include omitting theoretical details (except those needed to explain practical concepts), providing more clinical scenarios, and keeping the answers straight and concise. I recommend this book both for the pediatric practitioners and postgraduates students.

Toy Kit for Kids with Developmental Disabilities (2nd edition, User Manual)

S. Venkatesan

All India Institute of Speech and Hearing; Mysore.

Pages: 64: Price: Rs 100/-

It is well known that toys play a very important part in the development of children. There is a dire need for toys for children with developmental disabilities (viz. children with visual, hearing, locomotor or mental disabilities, speech delay, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, etc.). This book aims to satisfy this need. It describes: (i) the methods for home training of children with developmental disabilities, (ii) the utility of toy kits (infant, toddler and preschool versions), (iii) the activity checklist for preschool children with developmental disabilities, (iv) important tips to parents for effective home teaching, and (v) common reasons for failure in home training program. The book has several Tables and pictures which aids in understanding this otherwise complex topic. The book along with the toy kits would be useful to all parents/caregivers of pre-school children with developmental disabilities, child guidance clinics, and to pediatricians who are interested in developmental pediatrics.

Academic Problems in Primary School Children Enrolled under SSA-Karnataka: Study Manual for Master Trainers

S. Venkatesan

All India Institute of Speech and Hearing; Mysore.

Pages: 108: Price: Rs 250/-.

Education is one of the most important aspects of human resource development. There is an urgent need to further improve the quality of education imparted to primary school children. This timely book aims to satisfy this need. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is the flagship program of the Government of India to attain universal elementary education of all children, including children with disabilities. This book has eight chapters which describe: (i) common myths about children, (ii) basics of child development, (iii) psychological problems in primary school children, (iv) their academic problems and early recognition, (v) public attitudes, parental reactions, and how to work with these families, and (vi) remediation and rehabilitation. The book has several informative case vignettes, tables and illustrations. This book would be very useful to sensitize, train and empower primary school teachers in the art of "inclusive education" and will help ensure success of the SSA program.
