Computers for Doctor.

Computers for Doctor. Editors: Naveen Thacker, Niranjan Shendurnikar, Amit P. Shah, Jeeson C. Unni Publisher: Jaypee Brothers, New Delhi. 1st Edition 2003, Pages 245, Price Rs. 200/-

Before five years, the use of computers by doctors was considered a novelty and a luxury. The doctors using computers were considered a class apart and the doctors not using computers were skeptical about its use in medicine. However in the last five years, the use of computers by doctors has seen a phenomenon rise. Many doctors have started using the computers in their practice. Computers are used not only for prescription generation, but also for hospital management, accounts keeping, CD books, internet, communications, web designing, etc. Practically all the presentations in the conferences are on power point. Slide projectors and OHP are rapidly becoming the thing of the past!

"Computers for doctors" is a complete book providing information for the computer beginners as well as for others who are well versed with their uses and applications. The basics of computer hardware and software are described in a simple and easy to use way. It has familiarized the reader with all the possible hardware components with the help of graphics. The chapter on computer software has tried to give justice to the most popular software used in day to day practice. Maintenance of computers is described for day to day maintenance of hardware and software, which is possible by doctors them-selves, without having to always call the computer professional. One of the most important chapters is on computer ergonomics. This aims at sensitizing the doctors to the early detection of physical and mental stresses related to the use of computer and the ways to prevent it from happening!

The section 2 of the book describes the specific needs of the doctor. It describes the ways in which a doctor can computerize his clinic and choose his medical software. It has described very well the ways in which medical professionals can streamline their work related to appointments, maintenance of data, personnel management, inventory control and accounting with the help of computers. Those giving frequent talks during conferences can be greatly benefited by detailed description on medical presentations. The research oriented and medical college teachers can learn a lot from this book. Section 3 of the book is devoted to internet. This section is of immense use to the user for remaining in touch with the latest in the e world.

The icing on the cake is provided by appendix of the book. It has described how one can minimize use of mouse by providing almost all the keyboard shortcuts. The book also provides useful references and internet links. The book ends with a very useful electronic glossary. There is some scope for improvement in this book. The graphics are hazy and should have been sharper. A chapter on accounts should have been included. Overall a must ‘keep and read’ for everyone, including doctors.
