Essentials of Tuberculosis in Children, 2nd Edition. Authors: Vimlesh Seth and S.K. Kabra. Publisher, Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd., 23/23-B Ansari Road, Darya Ganj, New Delhi 2001. Pages 415; Price Rs. 350/-. Essentials of ‘Tuberculosis in Children’ by Vimlesh Seth and S.K. Kabra is an excellent comprehensive monogram on tuberculosis. Recently published second edition of the book is an improvised version, which has very aptly addressed emerging issues such as drug resistant disease and co-infection with HIV. Epidemiological information provided relates to Indian situation with special reference to children. Clinical spectrum of tuberculosis has been described based on local experience and correlated with immune response. Case studies in neuro tuberculosis and chapters on congenital tuberculosis and pulmonary disease provide useful insights to the problem. Interpretation of diagnostic tests has been highlighted with clear emphasis on pitfalls. Management issues have been updated with inclusion of consensus statement issued by lAP and revised national tuberculosis control program. Reader friendly presentation with clarity is the hallmark of this monogram. Tuberculosis is a disease with wide variations in clinical profile, confusing results of diagnostic tests and unsolved problems of management. This monogram will serve as a useful tool to rationalize diagnosis and management of childhood tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is no longer a disease of developing countries alone and I strongly recommend this book for every pediatrician who will have to deal with changing facets of this disease. Y.K.
