Flexible Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy in Children |
An excellent treatise on flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) in children! As the subspecialties in the field of pediatrics come of age in our country, there shall be a greater felt need for texts which are enriched with indigenous experience and innovations. The author of this book is a very senior pediatric bronchoscopist and has instilled the book with his immense experience of over 2,500 bronchoscopies in children. The book is made up of several small chapters which provide the necessary information on all aspects including setting up of a bronchoscopy unit, normal anatomy and abnormal findings. Thus the book shall be an essential guide for the beginner through the maze of bronchial tree. The section on indication of bronchoscopy is very exhaustive with separate chapters highlighting the benefits of FOB in different clinical situations in children. Each situation has been detailed with regard to possible causes and is accompanied by a photograph of the bronchoscopic findings. This makes the book a ready reckoner for the beginner as well as the experienced. In my opinion the biggest strength of this book is in the one hundred respiratory cases which have been discussed with their endoscopic findings - the authors’ pearls of wisdom. The book can be easily carried in the pocket of the coat and contains hundreds of coloured pictures on high quality art paper. The price of the book is justified by its high production value. The book shall be a useful companion of any budding respirologist. I am hopeful the subsequent editions shall benefit from some further editing, maintaining proportions of the resized photographs and regrouping of similar cases at one place. While I appreciate that any increase in bulk of this book shall add to its cost, yet, one often wishes that some of the photographs were little bigger in size for better understanding. Overall a good book which fills an important void. Varinder Singh,
