Communication for Biomedical Scientists

Communication for Biomedical Scientists: Editors: S.R. Naik, Rakesh Agarwal, Published by Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi. Pages 1-180; Price not mentioned.

Field of bio-communication has become vast and there is a lot to learn. Over the years publication process has also become stringent. It is becoming increasingly tough to get article accepted in reputed journals. Lack of clarity of presentation and poor command over English language often results in rejection of even well researched works. Authors of the Book have done a commendable job, which will help immensely to improve the communication skills of researchers.

The book lucidly describes the art and science of writing article for various sections in medical journals. The IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) format of writing original articles has been given special attention. Choosing the right journal for submission of an article is another important area covered in the book. Sensitive issues like scientific fraud and conflict of interest have been dealt with appropriately. Postgraduates will find the book useful as there are sections on how to write thesis, and use audio-visual aids and computers. It is apparent that the authors have been inspired by a similar book on ‘How to write a paper’ by George M. Hall. However, the present book has been Indianized with some innovative sections like podium presentation, poster presentation, speech delivery, etc. A long felt void is thus met and budding medical writers will be mostly benefited. The quality of production is excellent.
