There are few studies evaluating the hypocalcemic effect of Phototherapy (PHT) with controversial results. In the recent report on this subject(1), it is worth noting that 9 (45%) of20 pre terms and 14 (70%) of20 term infants receiving PHT. did not develop hypocalcemia. It will be interesting to know (even though the numbers may be rather small for statistical analysis): (a) Whether hypocalcemia was more often seen in those with higher peak serum bilirubin levels; and (b) Whether hypocalcemia incidence was higher in those receiving PHT for longer duration.
Further to elucidate the pathogenesis of hypocalcemia, it will be worthwhile to analyze the serum levels of phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, paratharmone and Vitamin 'D' levels in infants on PHT. Should we consider Vitamin 'D' supplementation as well alongwith calcium to PHT
induced hypocalcemic newborns?
