Image collections on the Internet:

The internet is a veritable storehouse of images on any topic, including health. Quite a few of these have been covered in this column previously. However, some new websites and websites which have had many changes are included below.

Google Images - http://images.google.com This is a lesser known feature of google, the popular search engine. This website offers a specific search of images in any topic in-cluding medicine. The thumbnail (miniature) images are displayed rapidly on entering a search query which then leads on to the enlarged image. Various types of images including clinical photographs, ECGs, X-rays are available here.

Emergency Medicine Informatics - www.ncemi.org/ The website of the National Center for Emergency Medicine Informatics contains a collection of medical images including a weekly image, ECG and X-ray quiz. In addition, the website also contains clinical query of the day, aphorism of the day, eponym of the day, " phobia of the day", recent articles in emergency medicine, drug info and practice guidelines. A version for the palm top computers is also available. The website also contains information on how to use computers in the emergency medicine department.

Three dimensional medical reconstruction - www.crd.ge.com/esl/cgsp/projects/medical/ One of the uses of computers and multimedia is 3D reconstruction of images. This website from General Electric company, offers a collection of 3D reconstruction of medical images including CT scan and MRI. These images will be of use for teaching purposes. The images are processed by a software which helps create a 3D reconstruction. The images include a "walk through" of the gastro-intestinal tract and vascular system.

Hematology Atlas - http://hms.medweb.harvard.edu/nmw/HS_heme/HemeCtnt.htm  or http://hms.medweb.harvard.edu/nmw/qry/core/setframe.cfm?crs=HS Heme The website of hematology from Harvard Medical School contains an atlas of normal blood morphology, peripheral smear images of hematological disorders, self assessment cases, lecture videos on hematology, power point presentations on hematology which can be downloaded and review articles.

ECG Image Index at University of Utah - http://medlib.med.utah.edu/kw/ecg/image_index/index.html This image atlas contains a large collection of ECGs, both normal and abnormal and has been hosted by the University of Utah School of Medicine. The ECGs are accompanied by a brief description. This is a part of the Alan E. Lindsay ECG Learning Center which provides online teaching of ECGs. Listing of image collections will not be complete without a mention of the following image collections in Pediatrics which have previously been listed in this column. These have had new additions and are hence being mentioned again.
