I have great pleasure and privilege to present four novel programs for improvement of pediatric education. These include:1) Faculty training program; 2) Intensive clinical training program for post graduate; 3) CD on undergraduate teaching; and 4) Art and science of paper writing.

Faculty Training Program

Teaching is an art in itself. Good teaching calls for more training in subject knowledge. It requires you to have total mastery over the class room with leadership and communication skills, teaching tools and techniques. This two day course aims to develop the teacher in you and enhance your effectiveness in class room. The themes and topic in this workshop include educational objectives, communication skills, teaching learning, self-learning, audio visual aids, voice control, use of black boards, projection slides, power point presentation, time management, group discussion, seminar, symposium, panel discussion, microteaching, questions, project methods, transaction analysis, oral examination, teacher evaluation, personality development and computer education. Based on these, we have prepared a module. The program was launched on a national level at AJ Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore on 20th and 21st August 2011. I congratulate Dr Santosh T Soans, the National convener and convener of the Head of Departments (HOD) Cell of IAP; Dr Anil Kumar, President of IAP, DK Branch; Dr Prasad Naik, Secretary of DK Branch and Organizing Secretary and all members of organizing team.

Intensive Clinical Training Program for Postgraduate Students

The results of the DNB examination are not upto the mark at present. This program has been initiated to improve the skills of postgraduate students in pediatrics. We have already conducted this training program at IMCH Calicut, Kerala, ICH Chennai/Tamil Nadu, and DY Patil Medical College, Pune. The next program will be conducted at Patna from 15th to 19th September. This program includes clinical case discussion, theoretical discussion of common pediatric cases and one day OSCE. I congratulate Dr Gunasingh, the National Chairperson and Dr Nagaraju, Joint National Coordinator for their untiring efforts.

CD on Undergraduate Teaching

The first CD on undergraduate training was released by Dr Nitin Shah under his presidential action plan. The new CD contains powerpoint presentation of all theoretical topics according to the MBBS curriculum, the common clinical cases, clinical examination, OSCE and a separate chapter on oral examination. Dr NK Subramanya is the chief editor of this CD and the newly appointed HOD Cell is also involved in this project. More than 100 teachers have contributed topics to this CD which is expected to be released at Pedicon 2012.

Art and Science of Paper Writing

This two day workshop on the Art and Science of Paper Writing is conducted by the faculty of Indian Pediatrics under the leadership of IP editor Dr Piyush Gupta. The national launch of the program was done at ICH, Kottayam, and the 2nd program was conducted at Apollo Hospital Delhi. The 3rd will be conducted at Bangalore. I congratulate Dr Piyush Gupta for his whole hearted commitment for this project.

Finally, I thank all IAPians for their help, guidance and encouragement given for all my action plans.
