The International Society of Tropical Pediatrics


Organization Profile: The International Society of Tropical Pediatrics (ISTP) was founded in 1986 with its temporary headquarters in Manila, Philippines. The headquarter is located in the city of the Executive Director.

Purpose: To promote pediatrics in tropical and sub-tropical countries by conducting seminars, workshops and other scientific meetings related to tropical pediatrics and to encourage interest pediatricians to familiarize themselves conditions which enjoy high priority, in tropical zones.

Membership is open to pediatricians from tropical countries, to those from other countries with special interest in child health in the tropics and to those who have contributed to pediatrics in the tropics throuth visits, lectures and other means. IAP can play a major role in ISTP by contributing it experience in the field of tropican diseases through its members.

The Standing Committee: The Standing Committee comprises of fifteen members to be elected by the General Assembly for a period of three years. The Standing Committee elects among themselves the President, the Executive Director and the Treasurer who with three additional members comprise the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee: The Executive Committee represents the Society in all legal and other matters.

Congresses: The First Congress was hosted by Prof. Prasong Tuchinda in Bangkok, Thailand in November 1987. Prof. Prasong became the President of the Society. The Second Congress was held in Nairobi, Kenya in March 1990 and Prof. Nimrod O. Bwibo became President of the Society after the Congress. The Third Congress was held in Cairo, Egypt in November 1993. Prof. Hussein K. Bahaa EI Din presided during the Congress and became the President afterwards. The Fourth Congress was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Dr. Mohd. Sham Kasim became the Fourth President. The Fifth Congress was held at jaipur, India from 8th to 15th February, 1999. Dr. Uday Bodhankar, Ex-National President of IAP, Nagpur, Maharashtra is currently the President of ISTP till 2002. The Sixth ISTP Congress will be held at Ankara, Turkey in September 2002.
