It is customary for the vaccinating agencies to
use the multidose vials for vaccines like Hepatitis B and
Hemophilus influenzae b. In this context, I seek a clarification
as to how long can a single multidose vial be used after breaking
open the seal. This, however, is subject to the assumption that
the vials are being stored at adequate temperature and appropriate
aseptic measures are being observed while repeatedly puncturing
the rubber cap of the vials.

The multidose vials of vaccines are meant to be
punctured the needed number of times to fully utilize the
contents. If the multidose vial contains liquid vaccine, and if it
is punctured under the usual careful handling, the vaccine can be
used until the date of expiry given for that vial. Many vaccine
maufacturers are now using better seals on their multidose vials,
than the old fashioned latex seals. Thus, multidose vials of
liquid vaccines are rather like multidose vials of insulin or
antibiotics. If the multidose vial contains freeze dried vaccine,
it should be used up withn 4 to 6 hours of reconstitution, and any
left over doses must be discarded.
